The Democratic Party has made attempts to remove him from the 2006 Illinois State Treasurer ballot. In order to give the Democratic Party endorsed candidate, Paul Mangieri, a better chance at winning the election. Giannoulias has made significant strides in the battle he must face in order to win this election. Not even thirty and with minimal political experience, the cards appear to be stacked against him. However, a recent endorsement by the beloved United States Senator, Barak Obama, is a clear indication that this battle is far from over. Giannoulias' energy and youth could end up being a beneficial attribute. He is currently championing his platform calling for an audit of the treasurer's "Bright Start College Savings Program." The Program holds 1.6 billion in funds for more than 75,000 participants. Giannoulias believes parents in Illiois deserve an Independent (third party) audit to gauge their investment.
